چکیده

A recent study suggests a neuronal circuit in the retina by which amacrine cells contribute to the generation of transient responses in ganglion cells, thereby enabling the visual system to detect changes in light intensity.

Sodium action potentials are not required for light-evoked release of GABA or glycine from retinal amacrine cells.

Although most CNS neurons require sodium action potentials (Na-APs) for normal stimulus-evoked release of classical neurotransmitters, many types of retinal and other sensory neurons instead use only graded potentials for neurotransmitter release. The physiological properties and information processing capacity of Na-AP-producing neurons appear significantly different from those of graded poten...

Interneuron circuits tune inhibition in retinal bipolar cells.

While connections between inhibitory interneurons are common circuit elements, it has been difficult to define their signal processing roles because of the inability to activate these circuits using natural stimuli. We overcame this limitation by studying connections between inhibitory amacrine cells in the retina. These interneurons form spatially extensive inhibitory networks that shape signa...

Amacrine cells: seeing the forest and the trees.

The amacrine cell class comprises as many distinct cell subtypes as the rest of the retina combined. Though bewildering in their number and diversity, amacrine cells nonetheless often exhibit common morphological motifs and physiological features, suggesting the alluring possibility that we might someday understand them as a functional collective. Our progress toward that “big picture” goal is ...

Involvement of Bcl-2-associated transcription factor 1 in the differentiation of early-born retinal cells.

Retinal progenitor proliferation and differentiation are tightly controlled by extrinsic cues and distinctive combinations of transcription factors leading to the generation of retinal cell type diversity. In this context, we have characterized Bcl-2-associated transcription factor (Bclaf1) during rodent retinogenesis. Bclaf1 expression is restricted to early-born cell types, such as ganglion, ...

Retinal Processing: Global Players Like It Local

A recent study of a specific type of retinal amacrine cell shows how a single interneuron can implement a large number of parallel feedback circuits, illustrating how highly complex circuits can be generated by a small number of neurons.
